UPSC Civil Services Exam (CSE): Complete Overview
The UPSC Civil Services Examination (CSE) selects officers for the IAS, IPS, IFS and other central services. Around 10–13 lakh candidates apply each year, and only roughly a thousand are finally recommended — so a clear strategy matters more than raw effort.
The three stages

How to plan across the stages
- Build the base — Read the official syllabus, then NCERTs and one standard book per subject.
- Practise PYQs + answer writing — Tag 10+ years of papers to the syllabus; start daily Mains answer writing early.
- Layer current affairs — One newspaper + one monthly compilation, connected to the syllabus.
- Revise more than you read — Multiple revisions of a small set of sources is what separates selected candidates.
