UPSC Mains Answer Writing: A Practical Framework

Mains is won on answer writing, not on how much you read. A well-structured, on-point answer scores more than an information dump. This framework helps you write answers that examiners reward.

A reliable answer structure

  1. Decode the directive — Note what the question asks — discuss, analyse, critically examine, comment. Answer that exact demand.
  2. Introduction (2–3 lines) — Define the core term or set context. Get to the point quickly.
  3. Body in clear parts — Use short paragraphs or points, each making one argument with an example, data point, or committee/report reference.
  4. Conclusion (2–3 lines) — Offer a balanced, forward-looking close — a way ahead or a reform, not just a summary.

Practise within the time limit: In Mains you get roughly 7–8 minutes per 10-mark question. Practise writing complete answers within that limit so exam day feels routine.
