What UPSC actually publishes — and what it never does
UPSC publishes previous-year question papers for Prelims (General Studies and CSAT) and every Mains paper on upsc.gov.in, along with answer keys for objective papers after the examination cycle concludes — not immediately after the exam. UPSC publishes no marking scheme and no model answers for Mains; anyone selling "official" Mains solutions is not selling anything official.
For Prelims, past papers are less about topics repeating and more about learning the Commission's question style: elimination logic, statement-combination traps, and the discipline of leaving questions you cannot rule down to two options — every wrong answer costs a third of a mark.
A PYQ routine for Prelims
- Attempt one full GS paper under exam conditions — Two hours, OMR-style, with negative marking applied honestly in your scoring.
- Sort every question into three bins — Knew it; could eliminate to 50/50; no idea. Your accuracy in the middle bin decides your Prelims — track it across papers.
- Do CSAT papers even if you are strong — CSAT is qualifying, but recent papers have failed well-prepared candidates who did not practise it. One past paper per week is cheap insurance.
Mains papers are a syllabus map: Read three years of Mains GS papers next to the syllabus and you will see how themes are phrased as questions. That mapping — theme to question form — is the highest-value use of Mains PYQs, ahead of answer-writing practice on them.
