UPSC Prelims Strategy: GS Paper I + CSAT

The Preliminary Examination is a screening test — its marks do not count toward your final rank, but you must clear it to reach the Mains. It has two objective papers: General Studies Paper I (counts for the cutoff) and CSAT (qualifying at 33%).

A reliable Prelims approach

  1. Build a strong NCERT + standard-book base — Cover fundamentals across Polity, History, Geography, Economics, Environment and Science.
  2. Solve 10+ years of PYQs by topic — Past papers show exactly what UPSC asks and how questions are framed.
  3. Master elimination + manage negative marking — Learn to eliminate wrong options; attempt smartly because wrong answers carry a penalty.
  4. Do not ignore CSAT — CSAT is qualifying but trips many candidates — practise comprehension and basic aptitude.
